Sentinel Healthcare Awarded $225,000 from the National Science Foundation to Create a Hypertension Prediction Tool

Funding from the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program will support the development of an algorithmic model to predict malignant hypertension physiology


SEATTLE, WASH., July 9, 2019 – Sentinel Healthcare, a clinically-validated digital healthcare platform providing remote monitoring and management of patients with high blood pressure and other chronic diseases, today announced that it has been awarded a $225,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The funding will support the development of a scalable and predictive software platform with a remote monitoring service that analyzes patient blood pressure data and delivers clinical recommendations. 

The development of the predictive tool will enable Sentinel to predict which of the individuals the company monitors are at the highest risk of serious hypertension-related events like heart attack and stroke. This will allow physicians to take interventional measures capable of preventing these events before they occur.

Shah, M.D., Sentinel’s founder and chief executive officer. “We are delighted to receive this funding from the NSF, which provides important validation of our approach to blood pressure management. Developing a predictive algorithm for malignant hypertension will enable doctors, for the first time, to triage patients before their hypertension manifests as a heart attack or stroke.”

"I am very excited to see Nirav and his team at Sentinel take the methods he learned in my lab while he was a stroke fellow at UCSF to work on predicting blood pressure physiology to enhance patient care," said Xiao Hu, Ph.D., associate professor of physiological nursing and neurological surgery at the University of California San Francisco. “A predictive tool will significantly improve doctors’ abilities to manage their highest risk patients and will have a massive downstream impact on the healthcare system by reducing hospitalizations and ultimately, healthcare costs.”
